Twin Ponds Park (H6)The Twin Ponds were not originally ponds at all, but rather a peat bog and wetland complex which the north fork of Thornton Creek ran through. In the 1950’s, this area was ‘mined’ for its peat, a rich soil supplement for use in the lawns of the growing suburban population in the area. In the years after the peat was excavated, leaving the peculiarly square cornered ponds, a family of Greek descent operated a commercial nursery on the lands surrounding the ponds. Both the strange variety of species and the unusual arrangement of plantings provide visible clues to this past.
