Northgate Mall (H2)

Touted as “America's first regional shopping center,” Nortgate Mall was built in 1950, over a decade before I-5 was completed through the area.  The time around Northgate’s completion began a period of huge population growth in north Seattle.  In 1940, an estimated 17,500 people lived in the watershed.  In 1960 there were 61,347 people living in this formerly rural area.

Today Northgate is the center of many new developments, including the creation of an urban village and returning Thornton Creek above ground at the sight of the former wetland. For more information on the Northgate area today, visit: the Northgate Stakeholders webpage.

Thornton Creek Watershed Virtual Tour

An online look at a living urban watershed

This historical picture of Northgate from 1950 not only shows the newly completed mall, but also the rural character of the area before Interstate 5 was completed.

The Thornton Creek Watershed Virtual Tour is in draft form. Please send comments to homewaters@sccd.ctc.edu.
