Neighborhood Green Mapping

The Neighborhood Green Mapping program engages secondary school students in the social and ecological health of their local neighborhoods through the use of Geographic Information System (GIS) technology and the international Green Map System.

In this 3-6 week program, students first learn how to use GIS software through a series of watershed health lessons. The teachers then guide their students in creating Green Maps of the neighborhood around their school using the international set of icons from the Green Map System. Students then go out into the field to gather data and place their icons onto their maps, and create a new GIS data layer that illustrates their issue of concern. Students conclude the program by sharing their projects with the other participating schools in an Exchange Day at City Hall.
