News from the Headwaters

We’re sorry if you missed author and longtime Homewaters friend John Lombard discuss his new book Saving Puget Sound: A Conservation Strategy for the 21st Century in January, but we have some exciting events this spring! Here's the latest news from Homewaters.

Save the Dates ~ Upcoming Homewaters Events

Saturday, March 3rd ~ Join us for the Long Walk!

Explore Thornton Creek’s North Fork and learn about the ecology, history, and current issues of Seattle’s largest watershed during this 6-hour urban hike. Homewaters offers guided walk free to all participants (reservations are required). Contact Colin Phifer to sign up at 206.526.0187.

Saturday, March 31st at 11:00am ~ Kids’ Concert with the Brian Waite Band!

Formed by three dads who love music and kids, the Brian Waite Band is famous for audience participation, zany songs and on-stage skits. The trio's music is rooted in jazz, blue grass, reggae, and rock-n-roll, and it's always danceable!  Bring the kids to dance and sing, enjoy snacks and drinks, and support Homewaters at this fun event at the Phinney Ridge Neighborhood Association building. Contact Colin Phifer at 206.526.0187.

Tuesday May 22nd ~ Know Your Homewaters Spring Gala!

Come celebrate our successes, silently bid on some delicious and delightful auction items, and hear the latest developments of Homewaters at Ray’s Boathouse Restaurant. More details to come! Contact Chris Page with your questions, to donate or suggest an auction item, or to volunteer at 206.526.0187.

Opportunities for Teachers

Connect Students to their Communities through Green Mapping

Homewaters invites high school teachers to join us for this spring’s Neighborhood Green Mapping project, our innovative program in which students use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software to investigate the social and ecological health of local neighborhoods. In this 3-6 week curriculum, students learn how to use GIS software, create Green Maps of their school’s neighborhood, and present their projects at City Hall with other participating schools. Contact Peggy Foreman to sign up or for more information.

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer with Green Mapping:

Know GIS? Help students connect with their communities by volunteering with Homewaters and participating schools for our Neighborhood Green Mapping project. Volunteers will assist students in the classroom with GIS software. Contact Colin Phifer at 526.0187 for more information.

New Program Staff

Community Mapping and Outreach Coordinator

Colin Phifer joins the Homewaters staff as Community Mapping and Outreach Coordinator. He brings a wealth of experience as a researcher, educator, and community outreach specialist to the Homewaters team and to his responsibilities for our publicity, volunteer recruitment, and Community Mapping initiatives.
